A 6g sample of Black Robin “The Green Genie” Purifying Clay Masque was the Day 13 gift in the Beautiful Christmas NZ 2017 Advent Calendar, and it came packaged in a cute recyclable paper envelope, with a colorful Black Robin sticker sealing it shut.
Once opened, the envelope revealed the fine khaki-coloured powder inside, and the instructions on the sticker read as follows: “Mix 1 teaspoon of Green Genie with just enough water to form a paste. Spread evenly on damp, clean skin (avoiding eyes) and rinse off with warm water after 10 to 15 minutes. Use 1 to 2 times per week. Do not use metal bowls or utensils.”
I followed the instructions, making the powder into a paste with one teaspoon of water, but I found that the paste was quite thick and very difficult to spread evenly over my skin, so I added a little more water, drop by drop, until I ended up with a fairly thin paste. I found this worked perfectly for me; it spread more easily and dried well.
Black Robin’s Green Genie is handmade in New Zealand, is cruelty-free and vegan, and contains French green clay, green tea leaf, spinach leaf, orange peel powder, and lavender flower powder. I was hoping that this clay masque was going to have a citrus or lavender scent, but it just smells like a combination of spinach and green tea, and it’s not a very pleasant smell.
After rinsing the masque off with warm water, I patted my face dry, applied toner and night cream, and my skin felt really soft and smooth. This clay masque does work well, but I doubt I’d be purchasing any more in future, as I really don’t like the smell.
